MAN — The Man High School girls’ basketball won its second straight victory after opening the season with a loss to arch rival Logan as the Lady Billies scored a thrilling 64-63 overtime win over Cross Lanes Christian on Tuesday night at the Man Memorial Fieldhouse.

Man had a 17-point lead mid-way in the third quarter but saw it evaporate as the Lady Warriors tied it at 57 on a jumper at the buzzer by Kathryn Legg to send the game in overtime.

In the extra stanza, Man senior Summer Sword banked in a runner off the glass that proved to be the winner with 54 seconds to go to make it 63-61.

Sword finished the game with 28 points and now needs only four points to break over the 1,000-point scoring plateau for her prep career.

Man coach Tonia Ward was happy with the win, which boosted her team’s record to 2-1 on the season.

“They stuck it out,” Ward said. “We didn’t fall apart there at the end. We got a little tired but overall my girls did a good job and I am proud of the way they battled tonight.”

Cross Lanes began the game with a 6-0 early lead.

The Lady Billies battled back to take a 18-13 lead after the first stanza. Sword had 10 of her 28 points in the quarter.

Man then went on a 6-0 run mid-way into the second quarter on baskets by Jennifer Schull, Mika McCoy and Sword to make it 30-20.

Taylor Whited hit a jumper and fast break layup and Sword had a runner in the lane as the Lady Billies took a 14-point lead at 38-24 into the locker room.

Man then extended its lead to 17 points at 47-30 with 3:12 left in the third quarter on a bucket inside the paint by Sword.

Cross Lanes then rallied, cutting the margin to 11 points at 49-38 heading into the final eight minutes of play.

Courtney Kendricks, Bethany Stepp and Kathryn Legg then hit baskets to cut the Man deficit to 49-44 at the 6:35 mark.

Man’s Morgan Conn later got a key steal and score with 2:29 to go to make it 55-50.

But the Lady Warriors came back to eventually tie the game at the end of regulation.

Whited’s basket put Man up 59-57 in overtime before Cross Lanes went on a 4-0 run to take a 61-59 lead with 2:10 left in overtime.

Sword later stole the ball and raced to the basket, tying the game at 61 with 1:18 remaining. Sword then scored the winner to give Man the win.

Cross Lanes was able to cut the deficit to 63-62 with 28 ticks left after Stepp split a pair from the free throw line.

McCoy added a free throw with just one second left to finish out the scoring.

Whited also scored in double figures for Man. Conn and McCoy finished with nine points apiece. Shull had four on the night.

Kendricks led Cross Lanes Christian with 25 points. Laura Jones had 17.

Man is scheduled to return to action on Thursday at Greater Beckley Christian. It’s the first road game of the season for the Lady Billies.
