As of this morning, Appalachian Power is reporting that power has been restored to all of their customers in Logan and surrounding counties. The utility company is also reporting that it has restored service statewide to more than 95 percent of its customers affected by recent summer storms.

Thousands of AEP customers lost power during a severe summer that hit the area on June 29. Smaller subsequent storms caused outages for people who didn’t lose power the first time, or who had gotten back on the grid.

People on public assistance who lost food because of storm-driven power failures now have until July 30 to apply for replacement food stamps.

The Department of Health and Human Resources extended the deadline late Monday so it can help families on the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program recover.

Anyone who lost food after the late June storms can apply for replacement benefits through local DHHR offices.

FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) has been distributing commodities such as water, meals and generators throughout West Virginia following the authorization by President Obama for an emergency declaration on June 30, 2012.

To date West Virginia has received from FEMA:

• Water - FEMA has issued 297 trucks (4,270,110 Liters)

• Meals - FEMA has shipped 750,000 meals

• Generators - FEMA has shipped 110 generators. These are industrial-sized generators power critical infrastructure and are not available for individual home use.

• Infant/Toddler support kits - 13 transferred to the state

• Oxygen Canisters - FEMA has ordered 1,500

On Tuesday, FEMA and the State of West Virginia began a joint Public Assistance preliminary damage assessment throughout the state to examine infrastructure damages only. The assessment will determine eligibility for federal disaster assistance.

The American Red Cross says it also has 200 workers out assessing damage and helping residents get the services they need to recover.
