HAZARD – Mabel Burklow wasn’t born in Perry County, but it was here where she made her mark in the education field for more than two decades. Mrs. Burklow, as she was known to her students, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 101.

Mrs. Burklow was born in Whitesburg, and also worked as the librarian at the former Fleming-Neon High School for several years before moving to Hazard in 1953. She then took a job as a teacher and librarian at Roy G. Eversole School, from which she retired in 1980 to care for her husband Ernest, who had suffered a stroke. Her entire career in education spanned 32 years in both Letcher and Perry County.

Educated at both the elementary and high schools in Whitesburg, Mrs. Burklow went on to college at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond. She put her college education on hold for a time when she married Ernest and, while raising three children, she returned to college, this time at the University of Kentucky. It was there that she and her daughter, Marcia, obtained their bachelor’s degrees on the same day in 1958. Mrs. Burklow also obtained her master’s degree from UK.

Ernest passed away in 1993, but Mrs. Burklow continued to make her home in Hazard, where, according to a story in a July 2011 edition of the Herald recognizing her 100th birthday, she retained her love of the region and people living here.

“Although the years have taken a bit of a toll on her mobility, Mabel still has the spark of enthusiasm which helped her become a teacher in the first place,” the story noted. “She relishes the opportunity to promote the attributes of her former students and her beloved eastern Kentucky.”

Funeral arrangements for Mrs. Burklow were handled by Maggard Mountain View Chapel of Hazard, where the visitation is scheduled for Saturday, July 14 from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 pm. The funeral services will immediately follow. She will be interred at Sandlick Cemetery in Whitesburg.

Mabel Burklow is survived by her daughter, Marcia Ann Burklow, and sons Samuel and Ernest Gerald Burklow, along with a host of other relatives.
