Perry escapee back in custody
HAZARD — A Perry County man who escaped from a jail work detail in Perry County Park almost a month ago turned himself in to authorities in Hazard on Friday.
James Herald, 33, of Combs, ran away while part of a detail cutting weeds at the park on July 3. A search effort involving both the Hazard Police Department and the Perry County Sheriff’s Office took place after he was found to have escaped. After several hours of searching, authorities were unable to locate him and continued working the case for several weeks.
Herald turned himself to the Kentucky State Police on Friday at 1:20 p.m., according to an official at the Kentucky River Regional Jail in Hazard. He was arrested by Detective Randy Combs before being taken back to the jail.
Herald was 33 days into a one-year sentence for shoplifting and public intoxication, according to court records. These cases date from 2011 and 2012. However, with his new charge of second degree-escape he could be facing up to an additional five years in jail.
