HAZARD — A local convenience store employee was recently cited for allegedly selling alcohol to a minor, while the store was also issued a fine.


Theresa M. Centers of Hazard was found to have sold beer to a minor at the Apple Market on East Main Street on June 21, according to the citation written by Ray Roberts, an officer for the Kentucky Alcoholic Beverage Control Enforcement (ABC). Centers was alleged to have sold a 24-ounce Keystone Light to an 18-year-old.


According to Nathan Jones of the ABC, the 18-year-old was working with the officer as a part of a compliance program.


“It was a part of an Operation Zero Tolerance Compliance check,” said Jones. Operation Zero Tolerance sends underage people into stores as a way of making sure that the businesses are in compliance with the standards for checking identification, asking birth date, and refusing to sell to minors.


Centers did not ask for any identification or date of birth when making the sale, according to the citation. She has been charged with sales to a certain person prohibited, minor.


According to a final order from the ABC, Apple Market was also found in violation when Centers sold alcohol to a minor. ABC gave a notice of violation to Apple Market on June 21, stating that they were seeking to suspend or revoke Apple Market’s license to sell beer.


Apple Market admitted to the violation and they waived their right to appeal. In the final order, the ABC gave Apple Market the option to undergo a 36-day suspension in which they would not be able to sell beer or pay a fine of $1,300. They have paid the fine in full.


Along with the fine or suspension, Apple Market is be required to have all employees undergo server training in alcohol regulations within 90 days of the final order, which was signed on July 18.


Apple Market could have a suspension of 10 days if they do not undergo training in the 90 days even after they paid the fine.
