MARROWBONE - Two men wearing police uniforms and armed with a 702-22 caliber rifle are accused of entering a Marrowbone residence during the early morning hours of July 13, removing items from the home while claiming to be in the process conducting a police investigation.

Joshua Spaulding, 29, of Lenore, allegedly conspired with Arnold Lee Perry III, 31, of Williamson, to enter the home of Bonnie Chafins located on Marrowbone Mountain near the Mingo-Wayne County line, disguised as officers wearing uniforms bearing the logo of “Royal Oak Police Department,” with the intent of committing a crime.

According to the criminal complaint filed by the Mingo County Sheriff’s Department (MCSD), the defendants stole a number of items from the dwelling including approximately 40 unidentified prescription pills, $150 in cash and a .22 caliber revolver.

Local law enforcement officials have been investigating a rash of burglaries in the Marrowbone/Jennies Creek communities over the last month, and feel strongly that the police impostors may be linked to other crimes.

Both defendants were charged with three felonies and two misdemeanors. They include burglary; impersonation of a law enforcement official or officer; conspiracy; petit larceny (items totaling less than $1,000); and robbery.

The arresting officers involved with this case were MCSD Deputy S. Smith, Deputy B. Moore, Sgt. J. Smith and Cpl. P. Muncy.

The defendants were arraigned before Mingo County Special Magistrate Joey Kohari on July 26 and then appeared before Mingo County Circuit Judge Michael Thornsbury on Aug. 2, and were issued equal bonds in the amount of $75,000. Both men were remanded back to the custody of the Southwestern Regional Jail at Holden.

Anyone who has additional knowledge of similar burglaries or incidents that may be related to thefts by individuals impersonating themselves as officers are encouraged to contact the MCSD at 304-235-0300.
