U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) brought his “Building a Stronger America Together” tour to Logan last Thursday to discuss the need to rebuild America and create jobs through infrastructure projects.

“Infrastructure isn’t just about roads, water and sewer,” Manchin told those crowded into the lobby of the Logan County Chamber of Commerce offices. “Infrastructure is also about building a clean, educated workforce.”

Manchin touched on a variety of subjects affecting the country, including energy, wasteful governmental spending, Social Security, the military, healthcare and drug abuse.

Accompanying Manchin to Logan was Paul Mattox, secretary for the West Virginia Department of Transportation, Tom Smith with the U.S. Federal Highway Administration and Chris Jarrett, executive director of the West Virginia Water Authority. All three gave an update on infrastructure projects in West Virginia.

“When you do infrastructure, it is not Democratic or Republican,” said Manchin. “Infrastructure is not partisan politics.”

Attending the event were several Logan and Mingo County officials including W.Va. Senator Truman Chafin and his wife, Tish, who is a candidate for the Supreme Court, W.Va. Senator Art Kirkendoll, Logan County Commissioners Danny Godby and Willie Akers, City of Logan Mayor Serafino Nolletti, Town of Man Mayor Jim Blevins, Chapmanville Town Manager Brian Kirkendoll, Logan County Prosecutor John Bennett, Logan County Circuit Judge Eric O’Briant, Mingo County Prosecutor Michael Sparks and W.Va. Delegate Rupert “Rupie” Philips.

This week, Senator Manchin will promote his “I Hire Veterans” project to increase veterans’ employment, discuss how the National Guard can help the military save money and strengthen defense and speak to business leaders.
