The Prestonsburg High School Class of 1972 graduated on May 29, 1972. Diplomas were presented to the 157 graduating seniors by the late Ronald Hager, Principal, and the late Woodrow Allen, Director of Instruction, Floyd County Board of Education and former principal of the school.

The Class of 1972 came together again on Saturday, July 21, to celebrate their 40-year class reunion with a dinner at May Lodge, Jenny Wiley State Park, Prestonsburg. Eighteen classmates and their spouses and guests, including a former faculty member and his wife, came from as far away as Durham, N.C., and Dayton, Ohio.

Floyd Beecher Allen, former faculty member at PHS, and his wife, Priscilla, joined the class for dinner and he shared some of his very special memories of the class to everyone’s delight.

Door prizes, donated by Cathy (Elkins) and Greg Campbell, were awarded throughout the evening to those winning certain trivia questions, such as “Who has the most grandchildren?” and “Who drove the farthest?” and through drawings. For the record, Johnny Huffman won for having the most grandchildren, six, and Sarah and Betty Jo DeRossett won Free Registration to the next reunion because they drove the farthest, from Durham, N.C.

D.J.’s Unlimited provided the “timely” 1960s and 1970s music and slide presentations throughout the evening. Classmates displayed family pictures and school memorabilia.

Thirteen deceased classmates were remembered with a table display in their honor and the playing of “Friends in High Places,” recorded by Mary Wright, classmate, who was unable to attend the reunion. The names of the deceased class members are as follows: Susie Justice Branham, Ronald Collins, Ada Lou Ousley Combs, Donald Howard, Linda Sue Johnson, Debbie Kendrick, Paul Edward Lemaster, Donna Robinson Goble, Guy “Tiny” Rorrer, Ronald Shepherd, Gayle Goble Shipman, Clark Slone, and Henry Slone.

Each classmate shared their special memories of school and a brief look at what they’ve been doing for the last 40 years. Present to photograph the group and conduct video interviews with each class member was LJ Productions of Prestonsburg. Classmates may purchase DVD’s and group photos by contacting them at 886-6324.

Many classmates joined in fellowship the following morning at Allen Baptist Church. The class meets the third Saturday of July every year for lunch at May Lodge from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and it is during those meetings that plans for the next big reunion are made. The next “big” reunion will be the third Saturday in July 2017.

Classmates and their guests who attended are as follows: Johnny and Patty Huffman, Donnie and Tamara Goble, Linda Gunnell Spradlin, and Henry and Belinda Branham Risner, all of Prestonsburg, Greg and Cathy Elkins Campbell, Dwale, George and Barbara Hale, Blue River, Ronnie and Kathy Lafferty, East Point, Sheila Goble Griffith and Carol Jo Clark May and Delano May, all of Allen, Sally Ann Goebel, Louisville, Wayne Worrix, Lexington, Teresa Hall Snapp and Bill Snapp, Berea, David Music, Georgetown, Freda Music, Dayton, Ohio, Sarah DeRossett and Rodney Alsup, and Betty Jo DeRossett and Frank Heisel, all of Durham, North Carolina.
