A tour offered by a local park will give visitors a chance to see some Eastern Kentucky wildlife.
Buckhorn Lark State Park Resort will be offering Elk Tours this year on private land not normally open to tours. A similar tour will be offered by one other state park, Jenny Wiley in Floyd County.
Elk were originally native to the area but were over hunted and became virtually extinct. After a relocation and repopulation project, the elk population is flourishing in the area. According to the Kentucky State Park system this is one of the biggest wildlife management success stories having around 10,000 elk in Kentucky.
The tours will only be held on select dates in the fall and winter at both Buckhorn and Jenny Wiley. Jenny Wiley will have tours on September 15, 16, 29, 30, October 20, 21, 27, 28, November 3, 17, 24, and December 1 with elk camping September 22-23 in the fall. The winter dates are Jan. 12, 19, 26, 27, February 2, 9, 16, 23, March 2, and 9.
Buckhorn will be hosting their elk tours on September 15, 22, October 26, November 17, and December 1 in the fall. Winter tours will be January 12, 26, February 9, 23, March 9, and 16.
The elk tours at these parks have been very successful with elk sightings on every tour. Tours at Jenny Wiley cost $30 per adult and $15 per child 12 and under. This cost includes transportation and breakfast. The elk campout cost $60 and includes meals.
Tours at Buckhorn Lake include meals and a night of lodging for $120 per couple or $90 per person. Just tours can be arranged.
