PIPPA PASSES — George Johnson, who received a degree from the College in 1974, and his brother Greg, both founding members of Johnson Industries, in Pikeville, recently presented an electric car to the school.

“We are grateful for our friendship with Johnson Industries,” ALC Executive Vice President Jim Stepp said. “George, of course, is one of our outstanding alumni, and he and his family exhibit the character, intelligence, and leadership that is helping to create quality jobs and improve the lives of many in our region. Their gift will help Alice Lloyd College as we continue to provide a quality, tuition-free education to our students.”

The car will be used campus-wide for various activities, but particularly as a way of transporting students and guests.

“We bought approximately 15 cars for research and development,” said Tony Bryant, a representative of Johnson Industries. “We decided to donate one of them to Alice Lloyd.”

Johnson Industries Inc. was established in 1981. Since then, the company has been manufacturing dependable, reliable and innovative equipment for the coal mining industry. They are an ever-expanding international corporation, with much of their equipment being used across the United States, Mexico, China, South Africa, and the Ukraine.

“Our family has many ties to Alice Lloyd College,” said George Johnson. “We like what’s being done there, and we think that the Stepp brothers are doing a great job. We wanted to do a good deed for an institution that does great things for the mountains of eastern Kentucky. The car is simply a token of our appreciation.”
