Man charged with holding 16 hostage

A Logan man was arrested and charged with hold 16 members of the Logan Regional Medical Center’s Emergency Room hostage on August 28. Christopher Ray Mitchell, 30, was charged with 16 counts of Holding Hostage, breaking and entering, destruction of property, two counts of assault on an officer and two counts of battery on an officer.
According to the criminal complaint, Mitchell allegedly forced entry into the LRMC emergency room by ramming a trash cart through a window valued at approximately $200. Once inside, he held “16 health care workers against their will and threatened to assault the health care workers” if he did not receive immediate treatment.
The complaint states that Mitchell “had a six-inch knife strapped across the defendant’s chest and was wielding medical equipment towards the health care workers in a threatening manner.”
When West Virginia State Troopers R.L. Glaspell and J.E. Garren arrived on the scene, Mitchell allegedly “attempted to shove both troopers and fight from begin detained.
Mitchell is currently lodged in the Southwestern Regional Jail on a $10,000 cash only bond.
There will be an ongoing investigation by Child Protective Service to resolve the matter.
