Several local area college golfers are back on the links for the 2012-13 season and are off to a fast start.

Former Man High School and Chapmanville Regional High School standouts Tyler Browning and Zac Gresham are off to a good start in the West Virgina Conference this fall.

Browning, a Bluefield State sophomore and Man native, shot rounds of 75-76 to finish at 151, plus-11. He finished in the 15th spot for the tournament and behind teammate Nick Dent, the tournament winner at 2-under 142.

The Beavers finished third in the 14-team event.

Browning was also a member of last year’s conference champion Bluefield team and participated with the Beavers in the Regional tournament in Hershey, Pa., where they finished sixth out of 20 teams. They narrowly missed advancing to the NCAA Division II tournament at the Cardinall Golf Club in Louisville, Ky.

Gresham, also a sophomore, and former three-time all-state golfer at Chapmanville, shot rounds of 73 and 76 on the par 72, 6,850-yard Lakeview Resort course. His two-day score of 149 was good for the 11th spot in the tournament. This was also his best two-day score in his college career. His best finish was 6th in last year’s conference tournament with a three-day total of 233.

The Hilltoppers earned a 5th-place finish in their first event.

West Virginia State’s Corey Justice shot a 163 for the two-day event to tie for 42nd. Justice is a former Scott High School golfer.
