GILBERT – Davey Ward, a senior for Mingo Central, who was flown to Cabell-Huntington Hospital during the third quarter in last Saturday’s game, is doing great.

Ward’s mother Brittney said her son was released from the hospital on Sunday and has been recuperating at home. “He still has headaches and some dizzy spells. And he gets tired easy, but he wants to go back to school tomorrow (Wednesday).”

“We let him go watch practice today,” Mrs. Ward said. “He begged us to go up there.”

She said the doctor released him and said he could play once the team trainer gives him the okay. However, she said head coach Yogi Kinder is making Davey sit out two games. He won’t be able to return until the Tolsia game on October 5.

“I had never seen anyone get a concussion before,” Brittney Ward said. “It was one of the scariest things I’ve been through. My husband (Dave) and I were scared to death, especially when we found out they were going to fly him out to Huntington.”

“We are just tickled to death and thank the good Lord above that is wasn’t worse,” she added. “Everyone was so supportive. The fans were praying in the stands and around the ambulance.”

Ward, who plays on both offense and defense, scored a 2-point conversion and was having a good game in the win against Westside, but unfortunately he doesn’t have any memory of that night.

Brittney Ward said the outpouring of concern was unbelievable. “Everybody supported us and came together,” she added.

She said that rumors that Davey had blood coming from his ears were false. On the play that likely gave him the concussion, he did lose his helmet. He had a small cut on his head and it bleed. He also had a little blood coming from his nose, but that was not because of the concussion.

The prognosis is good and Davey Ward should be back in a couple of weeks. He will likely be back on the sidelines supporting his teammates this Friday night.
