Boone County Schools will offer free 3-5 year old on Friday, Sept. 28. There will be free vision, hearing and speech-language screenings. Please call 304-369-8267 to schedule an appointment.

Attention Scott High Alumni Band

The Scott High Alumni Band will be performing with the current Scott Skyhawk Marching Band during the pregame show at this year’s Homecoming game on Friday, October 5. Practice will be held immediately before the game in the Scott Band Room. Optional practices will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday September 16 and Sunday September 23 also at the Scott Band Room. Please plan to enjoy this exciting event with current and former band members. Boone County Fair’s Annual Fall Craft and Flea Market

Boone County Fair’s Annual Fall Craft and Flea Market will be Saturday, October 6, 2012 at 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Spaces are $15 with one table. Set up is after 5 p.m., Friday, October 5, 2012. There will be a hotdog and bake sale inside also. Spaces are going fast, call 304-245-8113 and ask for Virginia.

Yard Sale

Foster Hollow Community yard sale is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 6, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Each yard sale will be at your own home on Left and Right Forks, PD, Bear Wallow, Honey Fork and Miller Lane. Start cleaning out!


There will be a “Neighborhood Watch” meeting Tuesday, Sept. 25, at 6p.m. at the Nellis Church/Archives for the Ashford-Nellis-Ridgeview-Costa areas. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Breast Cancer Awareness Walk

There will be a Breast Cancer Awareness Walk on Friday, Sept. 28, at 1 p.m. a the Boone Memorial Hospital Campus. Entry fee is $10 and you can pay at the door. The fee includes a BREAST CANCER AWARENESS T-SHIRT and MEMORY/SURVIVOR RIBBON that will be displayed on our memory wall in the hospital lobby throughout the month of October.

Enjoy refreshments, several gift giveaways and a grand prize drawing at the conclusion of the walk. Call the Radiology Department at 304-369-8805 for more information.

2nd Annual Julia Price Breast Cancer Foundation Walk

The 2nd annual Julia Price Breast Cancer Foundation Walk will be on Sept. 29, 2012. Registration starts at 8 a.m. and the Walk/Run starts at 9 a.m. There will be an entry fee for every walker/runner. Shirts will be available for those registered. The age limit for Secret Santa is children 12 and under. If you receive food stamps you automatically qualify but must bring your food stamp card with you. If you don’t receive food stamps you must bring in proof of all household income and do the monthly expenses to see if you qualify based on household size. You also need Social Security numbers for all household members.


The Boone Madison Public Library Board of Directors meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 20, 2012, at 5:30 p.m. Meetings are open to the public and are held at the Madison library.

Rally at Madison Civic Center

Citizens for coal and West Virginians voting for jobs and roads will have a gathering and rally at the Madison Civic Center on Sunday, Sept. 30. There will be a variety of music, including country and western, gospel and bluegrass. There will also be free food and special speakers. The event will also feature a mine rescue capsule. Everyone is welcome to attend this gathering.

REV UP’S Fall Festival

REV UP Madison is sponsoring a Fall Festival, Sept. 30, Sunday, 1 to 5 p.m., at the Madison City Park. Expect a fun filled day enjoying and buying food and fall crafts from over 20 local vendors. Enjoy a free scoop of apple butter made by Buddy Hudson with homemade rolls by Judy Harless.

Bring your lawn chair, set and enjoy the fall leaves and be entertained by area artists, Logan Darnell, Madison Community Band, Lincoln Co. Cloggers, Seth Bunting, Trish Price and Madison Methodist Quartet.

Games and prizes for all ages, inflatables sponsored by Fountain of Life Church 2 to 4 p.m., corn hole, sack races, duck pond ages 4 and under, basketball toss ages 5 to 15, and crack a noodle. Special game events 2 p.m. for strong teens to adults a hay bale toss with monetary prizes and 4 p.m. rubber ducky race, you may win $500 if you have the lucky duck. Other special events are in the works.

REV UP members request no pets please unless a service dog. There will be free parking at Hill Chiropractic, Madison Main Street and city parking lots.

Rubber Duck Race

Essay contests

The Daniel Boone Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5578 and its Ladies Auxiliary are sponsoring two essay contests. The Voice of Democracy Contest is a typed and audio essay. This year’s theme is: “Is Our Constitution Still Relevant?” The contest is open to students in grades 9-12, home schooled students are also eligible. Deadline is Nov 1, 2012—-The Patriot’s Pen Essay is a contest open to students in grades 6-8. Also open to home schooled students. This is an essay of 300 to 400 words. This year’s theme is: “What I would Tell America’s Founding Fathers” Deadline for the contest is Nov. 1, 2012. Foster Neighborhood Crime

There will be a Foster Neighborhood Crime Watch meeting on Thursday, Sept. 20, 2012 at 7 p.m. We will be getting ready for the Foster Hollow Community Yard Sale coming up on Saturday, Oct. 6. Come help us plan the big day.

Van High School 50 year reunion Class of 1962 and Roger Osborne Coal Camp Reunion

Dear classmates and friends, we are having our 50th year class reunion on Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012, at the Park Avenue Restaurant, Danville, WV 25053, and beginning at 6pm. We will be having a Buffet dinner and the cost of the dinner is $34/couple, includes gratuity and the cost of singles is $17, which includes gratuity. Coat Drive

Do you have coats that you don’t need anymore? Donate them!

Winter is here and there are people in our community who could use a nice warm coat. Between now and Nov. 5, there will be a box available for you to donate your gently-used coats. They will be going to BC Residents/Union Mission, which is in desperate need of coats. You can drop the coats off at the Town of Danville Community Center! Please only donate clean, reusable coats! The 2nd Annual Big Coal River Heritage Festival

The 2nd Annual Big Coal River Heritage Festival will be held on Saturday, September 29, 2012 at John Slack Park, Racine, West Virginia. The festival will begin at 10 a.m. and last until 6 p.m. There will be crafters, food vendors, musicians, quilts on display, and a tour of the one room schoolhouse. Logan Civil War Heritage Weekend

The Logan Civil War Heritage Weekend is set for Sept. 29 and 30 at Chief Logan State Park in Logan. Admission is free to the public and the events featured are Civil War demonstrations, quilters, and activities for the children, face painting, hay rides and so much more. Refreshments will be sold.

TOPS meetings

TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) meets every Thursday at the Fountain of Life Worship Center, Rock Creek. The entrance is on the left side of the building. Weigh in is from 5 to 5:30 p.m. TOPS is a nonprofit Weight Loss support group. Membership is $28 a year which includes a monthly magazine. Games and incentives are used weekly for weight loss motivation. TOPS is open to men, women and children seven years or older.

Sherman High School

Scott High School’s class of 2014 will be publishing The Scott High School Community Cookbook this spring. The school would like to encourage all community members to submit their favorite recipes. All submissions need to be turned in no later than March 5th.
