NAUGATUCK – Senior quarterback Mikey Newsome threw for 233 yards as Tug Valley Panthers defeated Tolsia 18-14 in a hard-fought game Friday night at Bob Brewer Field in Naugatuck.

It was the first football win in school history for Tug Valley over Tolsia High School.

Newsome completed 11-20 for his total and also had a late interception to help stop at Tolsia rally and help seal the victory for the Panthers.

Senior running back Aaron Muncy got Tug Valley on the board in the first with 6:24 left in the quarter as he bulled in from seven yards out. The conversion failed, but the home team led 6-0.

Tolsia tied the game in the second quarter as Dawson Pressley scored on a 5-yard run. The kick failed and the game was knotted at 6-6.

With 3:34 left in the half, Tug Valley’s David Runyon scored from three yards out. The conversion run failed, but the Panthers took a 12-6 lead heading into the dressing room at the half.

In the third quarter, Muncy hit pay-dirt from one yard away on a 4th and goal situation. The run failed, but the TD gave the Panthers an 18-6 advantage.

Tolsia scored on the first play of the fourth quarter as Brandon Ward broke free on an 18-yard TD run. The 2-point conversion run was good by Dakota Robertson, to cut the lead to 18-14.

Tug Valley then held on to pull out the victory.

Muncy rushed 17 times for 63 yards and a score. He also caught three passes for 60 yards. Runyon carried the ball 10 times for 23 yards and a TD and caught four passes for 65 yards.

Jesse Mays caught a couple of Newsome passes for 15 yards, Ryan Preece had a big catch for 63 yards and Corey Dillon caught a pair of passes for 32 yards.

Isaac Parsley had 10 tackles and a sack to lead the defense of Coach Tony Clusky. Muncy and Tyler Conley also had 10 tackles. Newsome, Austin Baisden and Corbin Oliver each picked off passes, while Preece recovered a fumble.

Tug Valley was ranked in a tie for No. 13 in Class A this past week. They are now 4-1 on the season and will travel to Hannan this Friday.
