Perhaps the two highlights of any political convention is when it is gaveled to order and when it is adjourned “sine die” (which means no time has been set for meeting again).

What do I remember and recall of the Republican and Democrat conventions? I watched some of both conventions. We all recall various parts of one or both conventions.

Here are things that impressed me to the point that they are still fresh in my mind.

1. The members of both parties are able to make a lot of noise signifying nothing. It was a time of celebration.

2. I was impressed and pleased with the number of younger people who were involved in both conventions We can hope those young people do not get their minds so warped and mixed up that they cannot function with a high degree of integrity and intelligence.

3. Hispanics were dominant among the minority groups. The old majority may soon be the new minority in both parties.

4. I have never attended or watched any convention where women played such a prominent role. For the most part, they did it well in terms of appearance and substance.

What about some of the speakers and personalities? There are old favorites of both parties and some new voices. I have had the privilege of teaching classes about making public presentations and have made more than 10,000 public speeches of one kind or another in my life. I have no intention of stopping. First, the Republican convention and highlights for me.

I enjoyed were Rick Santorium, Chris Christie, Ted Cruz, Nikki Haley, Marco Rubio, Rand Paul, Condoleezza Rice and Susana Martinez. Speakers I have met and liked were Mike Huckabee, Jeb Bush, Mitt and Ann Romney. Mitt Romney’s speech was the highlight.

The Democrat Convention came on when I was tired and most of them sounded the way I felt. Michelle Obama passionately told about the President. Her dress was attractive and their daughters are beautiful and growing up. One of my favorites is Vice President Joe Biden. I’m always wondering what he is going to say. President Obama, reads well and speaks up, but he seemed to lack the fire and certainty he had four years ago. Four years in that job will put some age on any person. I pray daily for the Obama family and the Romney family.

Other Democrats whom I have met and enjoyed them in person or on film at the convention include Jimmy Carter. Edward Kennedy, Joe Biden, Dick Durbin and Bill Clinton, a terrific speaker. I have not met the Obamas.

Democrats and Republicans both should know that if God is not the essential center about which everything else revolves, we are doomed as a nation in spite of all the speeches and promises made.

Note these words of David, king of Israel, “The wicked shall be turned into hell, And all the nations that forget God” (Psalm 9:17).

Sometimes I get the feeling that politicians and political conventions get so puffed up about their own importance and power that they mock God, the Creator, the One our founding fathers recognized as the one from whom we receive “Unalienable Rights.” The Bible clearly states that some will not inherit the kingdom of God. “Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards … will inherit the kingdom of God” (I Corinthians 6:8-11). Read the entire chapter. There is forgiveness, cleansing and restoration for every sinner who repents and believes in Jesus Christ.

I am not the author of the message. I just deliver it. It applies to me as it does to you.
