MOREHEAD - Will Branham is contributing in his freshman season for the Morehead State University men’s golf team. Branham starred in both golf and basketball at Pikeville High School.
Named to the 2011 Kentucky High School Athletic Association All-State Team, Branham played in six state championships. He was tabbed as the 2012 Region Player of the Year.
Branham has excelled in golf on all levels. He won five Eastern Kentucky Junior Golf Association events in 2011-12 season - two at Morehead State’s home course Eagle Trace, one at Mt. Sterling, one at Green Meadow and one at Bellefonte. Branham tallied a stroke average of 71 on the EKJGA Tour.
Earlier in the week, Branham shot a 235 for Morehead State in the Louisville Cardinal Intercollegiate at the Cardinal Golf Club.
The MSU men’s golf program is under the direction of Dr. Rex Chaney, a four-time Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year. Chaney is in his 37th season of leading the Morehead State men’s golf program.
Chaney was named the conference’s top coach after the Eagles captured league championships in 1977, 1981, 1993 and 1999. He has also directed MSU to six other top-three league-tournament finishes.
Chaney has coached 20 All-OVC selections, six All-OVC Tournament honorees, six conference-tournament runners-up, three league-tournament medalists and two OVC Players of the Year. The group includes his son Lee and current Professional Golf Association Tour member Josh Teater.
