PIKEVILLE – The University of Pikeville women’s soccer team picked up a win Tuesday afternoon over the Bob Jones University Bruins despite a very muddy pitch at Bob Amos Park. The win snapped the Bears out of a three-game losing streak to bring their record up to 3-3. With the loss, Bob Jones, a first-year program, slipped to 2-5.

The Bears were able to grab both of their goals in the first half, the opener coming in the 11th minute via the right foot of Olivia Gipson. Gipson took a layoff pass from Katelyn Abdon and shot home from the top of the box to beat Bruin keeper Caitlyn Harris.

Gipson’s effort was soon supplemented in the 22nd minute by Kayla Robertson after Carmen Koster’s cross slipped through the fingers of Harris, leaving the unmarked Robertson to coolly slot home from close range.

Freshman midfielder Jenn Wise brought the Bruins back into the game in the 67th minute with a superb piece of dribbling to beat her defender one-on-one, then scoring from close range by shooting across UPIKE keeper Chelsea Schulte. This made it the first game of the year for the Bears wherein both teams scored.

The Bears were denied a third when Koster received the ball in a one-on-one situation against Harris, only for the keeper produce one of her ten saves.

Schulte meanwhile would finish with 11 saves, including eight in the first half.

Pikeville will return to action on Saturday evening, hosting St. Catherine at 5 p.m.
