It is hard to believe that the high school football regular season is already halfway over in Kentucky and this past Friday was the midway point in West Virginia.

With that said, it is time to start thinking about the playoffs. Both Mingo County teams, Mingo Central and Tug Valley, have a chance to make the post season. The Miners are ranked in the top 16 in Class 2A, while the Panthers are ranked in the top 16 in Class 1A.

Meanwhile, the Belfry Pirates are ready to make another strong run in the Bluegrass State’s 3A division. The Pond Creek bunch lost a heartbreaker to Louisville Central in the state championship last season.

Most coaches don’t want to look that far ahead, but looming down the road for the Pirates is Breathitt County. Belfry is currently ranked No. 4, while Breathitt comes in at No. 2.

However, Belfry will get a test when they travel to Ashland Paul Blazer on October 5 and Johnson Central on October 26, which should help them prepare for the post season.

Short stuff …

The Belfry High School volleyball team will be hosting a Breast Cancer Awareness game on Thursday, October 4 against Phelps. Each team will be honoring those fighters in their own ways, by wearing pink on the court. There will be raffles on baskets and pink themed concession items will be sold. Also, $1 donations will be taken on pink paper ribbons for those brave fighters and those whom have lost their battle. The names will hang on the wall in the BHS gym. Those who attend wearing pink will get in for $1.

If anyone is interested in buying a T-shirt, raffle ticket, or pink ‘Honor/Memory’ ribbon, please contact coach Autumn Chapman.

… Tug Valley golfer Joe Deskins has qualified for the state golf tournament. He will play at Oglebay Park at the state event October 2 and 3 in Wheeling. He is only the second golfer from Mingo County to make the state tourney. Tug Valley’s Davey Jude, who also golfed at Tug Valley, made the state tourney. Jude is now golfing at Marshall.

… Grammy-winning country music star Trace Adkins sang the national anthem before this Saturday’s WVU game against Baylor University. The 6-foot- 6 former oil rig worker was just one part of the weekend festivities in the Mountaineers first-ever Big 12 Conference game.

… Former Red Sox outfielder Carl Yastrzemski said being in a pennant race will help Detroit’s Miguel Cabrera in his attempt to win the Triple Crown. And Yaz should know: He’s the last player to lead his league in batting average, homers and RBIs in the same season.

Yastrzemski batted .326 with 44 homers and 121 RBIs in 1967, when the “Impossible Dream” Red Sox clinched the AL pennant on the last day of the season.

… Reds manager Dusty Baker had a mini-stroke in addition to his irregular heartbeat last week and will need another week of rest before he’s able to rejoin the team for the final regular season series and the playoffs.

… Because of our early press deadline for Sunday, the Marshall and Kentucky football game stories will not appear until Tuesday. Some of our local high school games may not be in until that edition also. We strive to bring you the coverage as soon as we can, but sometimes situations happen where we can’t have the story in the next day. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
