GOODY, Ky. – It was no surprise Belfry bowled over East Ridge in Friday night’s game at CAM Stadium between the Class AAA district rivals.
The Pirates, ranked No. 4 in the AP in the Bluegrass State, defeated East Ridge 51-0 in their homecoming game.
Once again Belfry’s strong running attack rolled up yards and points. But, the Pirates also got some decent yards through the air in the contest.
East Ridge got the opening kickoff and after a three and out they were forced to punt. Belfry sophomore Keaton Taylor took the punt and raced 65 yards for the touchdown. The kick was wide right, but with 9:19 left in the first quarter Belfry took a 6-0 lead.
The Warriors could not get anything going against the stingy Pirate defense and they were forced to punt once again. After a shanked punt, on the second play from scrimmage, junior Justin Johnson took the handoff and hit pay-dirt from 46 yards out. Quarterback Sani Warren hit tight end Tony Messer for the 2-point conversion and with 6:21 left in the opening quarter, BHS led 14-0.
This is was senior Josh Robinson’s turn. He too the football 55 yards into the end zone on Belfry’s next offensive possession. Trinity Carr booted the extra point to make it 21-0 with 1:58 remaining in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, at the 7:23 mark, Carr scored on a 38 yard run. His kick made it 28-0 with 7:23 left in the first half.
With 4:42 left in the second quarter, Warren hooked up with Robinson for a 15 yard TD pass. The kick by Carr made it 35-0.
With 2:33 left in the half, Eli Huddle was credited with a safety after a high snap on a punt attempt by East Ridge.
Belfry got the pigskin back on the free kick after the safety. Then Robinson and Warren hooked up again for a 38-yard pass and catch TD. Johnson ran in for the 2-point conversion to give the Pirates a 45-0 halftime lead.
By Kentucky rules, once the score reaches a 45-point deficit, the clock continues to run in the second half. So Belfry got just enough points to make that happen.
In the second half Pirate head coach Philip Haywood played his second string and junior varsity.
The Pirates got one more score by freshman tailback Xondre Willis who broke free for a 46-yard TD. The conversion was no good, but that was the final scoring in the contest.
Johnson only got a couple of carries for BHS and picked up 46 yards and a TD. He also caught a pass for 35 yards. Carr rushed three times for 53 yards and a score. Robinson rushed for 64 yards and had 74 yards via the air and scored a trio of TDs. Taylor picked up 36 yards on the ground and had the punt return for a TD.
Warren, the junior signal caller, connected on 9-of -15 passes for 156 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He scored one TD on a keeper, but it was called back because of a penalty .
The Pirate defense held the Warriors to just 78 total yards.
Senior Hope Lemaster was crowned the 2012 Miss BHS queen at halftime during homecoming festivities.
Belfry is now 5-1 (2-0 in the district) on the season and will get a much tougher test this week as they travel to Ashland Paul Blazer Friday. East Ridge is now 1-5 and will play host to Sheldon Clark this week.
