WAYNE – The Wayne Pioneers didn’t have to circle the wagons, they just rode hard and fast to defeat Mingo Central 53-12 this past Friday night.


Wayne, the defending Class 2A state champs, came into the game undefeated and ranked No. 2 in the state. It was also homecoming for the Pioneer student body and their fans.


Wayne (5-0) rolled up 443 yards in the first half. At the same time they held the visiting Miners to minus-11 yards in the first two quarters.


The coaches agreed to let the clock run continuously in the second half.


Mingo Central’s Alex Lee was the one bright spot for his team as he ran back a punt 76 yards for the one score in the first half.


Pioneer all-state tailback Brandon Spurlock had three touchdown runs and 100 yards while Mason Hodge added 82 yards on two carries and a score. James Egnor had 62 yards and a touchdown, and Nathan Spurlock added 70 yards on just four attempts.


For good measure, Grant Ferguson connected with Zach Cassidy for a pair of touchdown passes.


The Miners’ (3-2) added a late score by freshman Deonte Joplin.


Wayne racked up 519 yards of total offense. Mingo Central, which entered ranked No. 7, had its three-game winning streak snapped.


Mingo Central freshman quarterback Stevie Hammond and senior linebacker Joe Hall were both injured in the game. (See related column for the injury updates.)


The Pioneers will travel to Madison to take on No. 1 Scott next week. The Skyhawks (6-0) beat Westside, 37-12.


Mingo Central will play host to Tolsia Friday night. It will be homecoming week for the new consolidated school.
