When I think October, there is another word that is almost a synonym with the month. That word just so happens to be Halloween. It doesn’t matter if you’re seven or seventeen; it’s really an awesome holiday. There are a lot of unique things that come with it to give everyone an opportunity for some cold weather fun.

One thing that I absolutely adore about this month is the haunted houses that pop up throughout the community. Although some dislike the feeling of being scared to death, many students would say that this is their favorite time of year for just that reason. It’s an adrenaline rush that is only available around Halloween. Two local favorites include the annually hosted haunted house in the Belfry fire department, and the new McCoy Manor in McCarr. I’ve even heard a lot of my classmates talk about heading to Kings Island for a weekend to participate in their Halloween festivities.

Another thing that’s really cool about this month is the costumes. I think it is a fun concept for people of all ages, because it’s one day that playing pretend is completely allowed. Even if you aren’t into the whole dress up thing, no one can disagree that there are some really, really cute little kids out there. I love to observe what other people have chosen to be for the night. I’ve seen everything from scary, to funny, to completely confusing. A few years ago I helped hand out candy after I finished trick or treating. I honestly couldn’t decide which one was more fun. I had witches, princesses, devils, angles, and a few coal miners at my door. The excitement on their face when I dropped a few pieces of candy in their bags was honestly priceless, and I defiantly wasn’t complaining about the candy that was dropped into mine.

Pumpkin carving and painting is a really neat activity for the month too. The FMD classroom has been painting pumpkins this week and they really are just too cute. The Southside Mall is also hosting a pumpkin decorating contest that all students are encouraged to participate in. Slowly but surely pumpkins decorated by families will be displayed throughout the community. I don’t care if I live to be one hundred years old, as long as I am able I will carve a pumpkin every October. I remember when I was really young; my dad would grow them in the garden so that my brother and I could have the biggest ones in town. The fun we had carving our designs and scooping out the middle is an experience every kid should get, and one that no one should out grow.

October is a magical time (pardon the pun) and a time that encourages imagination. I feel like it’s truly a time of youth and clean fun. Holidays like Halloween remind us that fun doesn’t always have to be complicated or stressful. Sometimes it’s as simple as exchanging tricks and treats.
