The Logan High School volleyball team went 0-2 in a tri-match on Thursday night at Chapmanville.

The Lady Cats first lost to Sherman, 25-12, 25-13, then lost to the host Lady Tigers, 18-25, 25-6, 25-13.

“Honestly, the intensity and the energy was not there when we played Sherman. We were sluggish and just seemed to have no excitement on the floor,” Logan first-year coach Chelsey Stockdale said. “We started off by digging ourselves a hole and then we can’t pull out of it. We did have some bright spots on the floor, but it just wasn’t enough. Lauren Ellis picked up some good digs for us out of the back row. She was right there every time and got the ball where it needed to go. Our setters, Summer Napier and Aarron Ward, had good games against Sherman. Our setters really worked hard and moved to where the ball was. Summer had some great saves and really played well tonight. Our hitters did well to, we just couldn’t find the open spots on the floor.”

Stockdale said her team came out the gate with energy in the match with Chapmanville.

“We came out in the first game with energy. The girls were excited and were pumped up and you could tell they were a completely different team from when they played Sherman,” she said. “We were working together, talking, and hustling after every ball. Katelyn Grimmett had a really good game. She was on with hitting and tipping to the right spots. Rachelle Toppings was on at the net to this game. Summer Napier had some great serves that helped us get ahead. Her serve has improved each game and she really steps up with each game.”

Stockdale said Logan then just ran out of fuel against the Lady Tigers.

“Unfortunately, late in the game we had one of our players go down. Herrera went up at the net and came down wrong on her ankle and immediately went down,” she said. “She left the game early and went to the ER. Luckily, her ankle is just sprained, but she is out for a couple weeks and that is going to hurt us some. The last two games I honestly don’t know what happened. We fell apart and played probably the sloppiest I have ever seen them play. I was not happy and the girls knew they weren’t playing their top game. The communication on the floor wasn’t there and the hustling wasn’t either. We were letting balls drop left and right and just had players looking at each other. I never like to make excuses for us when we don’t play well, but I know our heads weren’t in the games tonight.”

Stockdale said her setters played well, however.

“Our passes weren’t what they usually are and that caused our setters to have to run for the ball and we couldn’t get anything set up. Even though we weren’t on, once again, our setters played smart and did the best they can to make plays out of some bad passes,” she said. “Summer had some good saves and did the best she could do. Aarron Ward, our other setter had some great saves too. Hannah Hunter saw some playing time and she did good. She did what she needed to at the net and it worked for us. Tiffany Jude and Kealeigh Morgan did well too. Both of them played smart and played really well at the net. It’s nice having a well rounded team with all around good players because when you have a few who are having an off game you have to have someone to rely on and we have players who can be relied on and can get in there and do the job.

“Even though this loss is hard, especially with Chapmanville being a rival, I am still pleased with the team because each game shows more and more improvement.”

Logan returns to action Monday at home against Lincoln County. The first serve is set for 6 p.m. The Lady Cats then host Westside on Tuesday and Tug Valley next Thursday.

Chapmanville was slated to host its annual tourney on Saturday. The Lady Tigers host Tolsia on Tuesday, Man on Thursday, Wayne on Oct. 23 and Tug Valley on Oct. 25 in the regular season finale.
