PIKEVILLE – The University of Pikeville volleyball team was outmatched Friday night, losing in three games as Asbury University won its third match in a row.
The Bears, who lost by scores of 25-10, 25-15 and 25-11, now find themselves at 3-17 heading into the weekend. The Eagles continue to ride an excellent run of good form which has seen them victorious in 13 of their last 14 matches.
The Bears faithful saw a glimpse of promise from their team in Game One as UPIKE were able to take an early lead over Asbury. It didn’t take long for the Eagles to find their grove though, as they quickly turned a 5-4 deficit into a 12-6 advantage in a stretch that ultimately decided the game.
Game Two was easily the Bears’ best performance of the evening, as they were able to stay with Asbury and tie the game at 14-14. Again though, the Eagles hit inevitably their stride and wouldn’t miss it again for the rest of the night. From the time the game was tied, they outscored UPIKE by a combined 36-12 in both games.
Senior Brittany Hodge led Pikeville offensively with four kills. Junior Stephanie Dounseroux, who had two kills, finished with 10 assists in the loss.
Sophomore libero Samantha Ayres paced the Bears with 18 digs. Freshman Haley Johnson added 14 digs for the Bears.
