Excitement is already brewing for the upcoming Coal Area Original Toughman Contest.

Fifty fighters have already signed up for this year’s event, which is scheduled for Nov. 9-10 at Logan High School’s Willie Akers Arena.

This will be the 25th-annual Toughman event at Logan. The first Toughman contest in the area was held in the early 1980s.

According to Toughman boxing promoter Jerry Thomas, up to 100 area men and women are expected to enter.

Area boxing fans will be treated to two professional fights at this year’s Toughman in addition to all of the amateur bouts.

On Friday Nov. 9, Jason Smith (5-1, 3 KO’s) of Logan will fight a four-round bout versus an opponent yet to be named. Then on Saturday, Nov. 10, Daniel Hensley (6-0) of Chapmanville will fight a four-round bout versus an opponent to be named later. Both Smith and Hensley are former Toughman Champions and fan favorites.

Tickets go on sale Saturday, Oct. 20 and will be sold at Mike Ferrell Toyota-Scion, Town N’ Country Foodland, LA Liquor & Lottery and at Uncle Sam’s in Man. To charge tickets by phone call 1-800-296-3897 or buy online at wvtoughman.com

The event has been sanctioned and will be supervised by the West Virginia State Athletic Commission.

In addition, Top’s Dinner Club of Logan will once again host the annual competition to select the official ring girls for the Toughman.

The Ring Girl Contest will be held at Top’s on Wednesday, Oct. 31 and Wednesday, Nov. 7.

A total of $1,600 cash plus various other prizes will be awarded to the four ring girl winners with “Miss Ring Girl” taking home $1,000 in cash, the title and a Miss Ring Girl Toughman jacket.

Any area lady, age 18 or older, may enter online at: www.wvtoughman.com or contestants may also fill out an entry form in person at Top’s.

Miss Ring Girl will be chosen by audience applause on the second night of the Toughman.
