The Logan County Commission met Wednesday afternoon quickly moving through items on the agenda to get to the good part of the meeting, the distribution of Community Participation grants by District 7 W.Va. Senators Ron Stollings and Art Kirkendoll.

The first order of business was the approval of exonerations then Commission President Danny Godby turned the floor over to Stollings.

In preparation of distributing the grants, Stollings reported that Logan County had the highest amount of population in District 7.

“Obviously those certificates are a little thicker than the other counties,” Stollings said.

Stollings then turned the floor over to Kirkendoll who explained a little about the grants that were going to be distributed.

“We had $143,000 apiece of what they called discretionary money,” Kirkendoll said. “We put that together and we had almost $300,000. We’ve made a huge difference in all the counties by taking things back to the seniors, the kids, programs, education and the libraries.”

Those receiving grants included:

• City of Logan Police Department received $10,000 for rescue and safety equipment and to purchase a rescue vehicle for the Hatfield McCoy Trail system to assist in rescue and emergencies.

• City of Logan Fire Department received $2,500 to upgrade supplies and equipment and $4,000 for equipment and supplies.

• Pride in Logan County Inc. received $10,000 for electrical upgrades to repair and replace kitchen equipment, $5,000 for Appalachian Outreach equipment service for harboring disaster victims and another $10,000 for kitchen upgrades.

• Town of Chapmanville received $3,000 for upgrades to sewer system and sidewalks, $3,000 for storm water drainage, $5,000 for Phase II one-mile walking track along the Guyan River and $5,000 to replace three water tanks and $30,000 to construct The Guyan Walking Trail.

• City of Man received $7,000 for community parks and improvements and the Buffalo Creek Memorial Library received $3,500.

• Logan County Board of Education received $3,150 for Man Little League bleachers.

• Logan County Commission received $2,500 and $5,000 for park upgrades, $1,500 for a snow plow and $10,000 to demolish abandoned structures along the Hatfield McCoy Trail connectors.

• Chapmanville Regional High School Softball Complex received one $12,500 grant for paving and upgrades and another $12,500 grant for CRHS Softball Complex upgrades. The grants were accepted by CRHS Softball Coach Ronnie Ooten.

• Logan County Board of Education received $5,000 for Logan High School cheerleading, $1,000 for Man High School baseball equipment, $5,000 for Logan High School Cheer Cat summer fitness and $10,000 for Chapmanville Regional High School baseball field capital improvements.

• 4H Safety Program received a grant for $3,000.

• Cal Ripken Baseball League received two grants of $1,000 each for upgrades in safety, lighting and equipment.

• Logan Buddy League received $1,000.

• Logan Area Public Library received $3,500.

• City of Logan Fire Department received $4,000 for equipment and supplied.

• Chapmanville Public Library received $3,500.

In other commission news:

• October was proclaimed Domestic Violence Month in Logan County

• Approval of Christina Ingels as victims advocate representative to Southwestern Regional Day Report Center Community Corrections Board

• Approval of the Kiwanis Club of Logan for $1,400 to help prepare a community luncheon to follow the Veteran’s Day ceremony set for Sat., Nov. 10 on Midelburg Island

• Accepted the resignation of Joshua Butcher as part-time assistant prosecutor and the hiring of David A. Wandling as part-time assistant prosecutor at the same salary of $35,000 yearly

• Approval of a contract for a paper shredder with Packard Business Systems for the home confinement office

• Approved a maintenance agreement with W/Cott Systems

• Approved reports from the Logan County Dog Pound and Home Confinement
