State ADA coordinator visits BSCTC
by Jack Latta
PRESTONSBURG – Faculty and staff at Big Sandy Community and Technical College had the opportunity to hear a presentation Oct. 16 by Norb Ryan, Americans with Disabilities Act coordinator for Kentucky.
The event was sponsored by the Office of Cultural Diversity and the Disability Services Office for Disability Awareness Month in November.
Ryan was introduced by Janie Beverley, disability services coordinator for the college and longtime friend, to kick off the event. Ryan began by sharing with those in attendance that a disability is something that in some way touches us all, and showed them a list of celebrities and other famous figures who had disabilities. He then enlightened the group about the ADA and explained its purpose in day-to-day life.
The ADA provides a clear and comprehensive national mandate for the elimination of discrimination against individuals with disabilities; provides clear, strong, consistent, enforceable standards addressing discrimination against individuals with disabilities; and ensures that the federal government plays a central role in enforcing the standards established in this chapter on behalf of individuals with disabilities. The requirements of the ADA cover activities of state and local governments requires that they give people with disabilities equal opportunity to benefit from all of the programs, activities and services, such as public education, employment, transportation, health care, recreation, voting and town meetings. The ADA has even moved now to cover cancer patients.
Ryan has served as the ADA state coordinator since 2001 and has served in some capacity of disability service since beginning his career in 1976.
