Rogers making several stops in region next week

U.S. Rep. Hal Rogers will be making several stops in the area during a two-day swing through the region next week.
Rogers will begin his tour of Big Sandy area counties in Paintsville, at Highland Elementary, where he will join with Operation UNITE, Americorp and Remix Education for a drug-free education rally at 1 p.m.
That evening, Rogers will be in Prestonsburg to attend the Bluegrass Policy Forum on Substance Abuse, being held at the Wilkinson-Stumbo Convention Center at Jenny Wiley State Resort Park. Rogers will join House Speaker Greg Stumbo, Gov. Steve Beshear, Senate Majority Floor Leader Robert Stivers, Sen. Brandon Smith and House Majority Floor Leader Rocky Adkins as panelists at the forum. The forum, which includes a question-and-answer session, will be moderated by Renee Shaw, of Kentucky Educational Television, and will focus on current initiatives being used to combat substance abuse.
The following morning, Rogers will be in Pikeville, to attend a groundbreaking ceremony for Jenny Wiley Theatre’s new indoor theater. The event takes place at 10:30 a.m. at the site of the new theater, located at the intersection of Hambley Boulevard, Division Street and Second Street.
At noon, Rogers will drop by Miss Ida’s Tea Room, in Inez, to present a legislative update at a Martin County Community Luncheon. Afterwards, he will travel to the Booth Energy Matrix Mine, where he will meet with underground coal miners at 3 p.m.
Later in the week, Rogers will be making a similar tour through the Cumberland Valley region, making stops in Somerset, Nancy, Middlesboro, Pineville, Harlan and Grays Knob on Wednesday and Thursday.
