Last week, I bought the funniest thing for a dear lady who is doing 30 days of chemotherapy. I was sure it would make her smile. I found a picture at Dollar Tree of a lovely white haired woman. It was a copy of an old picture, purposely faded. At first glance, it appeared to be a normal photo. The lady’s hair was perfectly styled. She was well dressed, wearing pearls even. When you turned it slightly, she turned into a beast right before my eyes. It cracked me up!

The picture kept getting moved around in our house. It seemed that everyone who came in picked it up. I laughed each time I put it back in its place.

After a week of looking at the two-faced woman, something profound came to me. While I had bought it for a joke, it reminded ME that there was something serious to be learned. We really are two people: the normal looking face on the outside and then the beast within. It made me wonder about which one comes out most…the kind, loving, Christ-like woman, or the snarling, raging, freak with sharp teeth.

Several Bible verses bring light to the subject. The first is one of my favorites…Psalm 39:1: “I will keep my tongue from sin. I will put a muzzle on my mouth.”

What should not come out of your mouth? Ephesians 4:29 says: “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up…” Do you think that’s only bad words? I don’t.

What needs to be pleasing to the Lord? Psalm 19:14 says: The words of my mouth.

James 3:8 describes the tongue as a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

Proverbs 21:23: (KJV) Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles.

Proverbs 31:26: (KJV) She opens her mouth with wisdom; and on her tongue is the law of kindness. (Seriously…what would people say is on YOUR tongue if you stuck it out?)

Finally, there’s the Fruit of the Spirit…NOT apples, oranges and bananas. What are they? Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Which one do you have a grocery buggy full of? Which one would your tank say EMPTY on?

Pray for God to help you be the woman or man you need to be, and tame the beast within. How do I KNOW we can do it? Philippians 4:13: I can do all things through Christ!
