PRESTONSBURG — After announcing recently that he would seek to become president of the state Senate, Sen. Robert Stivers did not reveal too much more about his plans while in Prestonsburg Monday night.

Stivers’ announcement came following the departure of Sen. David Williams, who resigned to accept an appointement by Gov. Steve Beshear to a circuit judgeship in the 40th judicial circuit.

At that time, Stivers told Joseph Gerth, of the Louisville Courier-Journal, that he intends to seek the Senate presidency and fully believes he has the votes to win.

On Monday, Stivers somewhat downplayed that announcement, focusing instead on his race for re-election.

“Since David is leaving, my name has been bantered about,” Stivers said. “I needed to make a statement, so people would understand. I’ve got to get through an election next Tuesday. If that happens, then I have made it clear that I will seek to become the president of the state Senate.”
