COLUMBUS, Ohio — It has pleased Almighty God, in His wise providence to summon from this earthly existence to Himself the soul of James A. Kostas of Columbus, Ohio, formerly of Sylvester, W.Va., and Richmond, Va.
James departed this life Saturday, October 27, 2012. By the grace of God he attained the age of 86 years. Born July 18, 1926 in Dorothy, James was one of four children born to Agapios and Irene Emanuel Kostas. He was baptized into the Greek Orthodox Church as an infant and has been a faithful Christian and a devoted church member.
He was preceded in death by both sets of parents, and sister, Anastasia Halkias.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 64 years, Irene Komons Kostas; daughter, Maria Gardina and grandson James Francis Gardina; daughter, Demetria (Jim) Heatwole and granddaughter Nikita Heatwole; brothers, Dr. Emanuel Kostas of Charleston, Rev. George (Elizabeth) Kostas of Logan, and Col. Nicholas C. (Linda) of Fort Worth, Texas; sister-in-law, Chris Kastretsios; nieces, Irene (Chris) Kossos, Karen (Michael) Dolin and Helen (Peter) Ferst; nephew, Athanasios Kastretsios; great-nieces, Penelope Dolin, Elizabeth Dolin and Katina Ferst; great-nephew, John (Vicki) Kossos.
James graduated from Concord College, owned and operated Kostas General Store. He was a veteran of World War II and served in the Philippines. James was a tireless worker in the church and was one of the organizers of the purchase, renovation and consecration of St. John Greek Orthodox Church of Charleston. He used his creative talent and tireless energies in the renovation and beautifying St. John’s Church.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 3, at St. John’s Greek Orthodox Church, 3512 MacCorkle Ave. SW, Charleston, with Father Louis Scoulas and Father David Shaw officiating. Interment will be held at Sunset Memorial Park, 4301 MacCorkle Ave.
SW, South Charleston.
Visitation will begin one hour prior to services Saturday at the church.
He will be deeply missed by family and friends, who he leaves behind to cherish his memory.
