The Perry County Central Commodores traveled to Berea Friday for the opening round of the 5A state playoffs. The Commodores took on the Madison Southern Eagles in what would turn out to be a back-and-forth battle.

Madison Southern got on the board first with a touchdown via the pass. The Eagles’ scoring play covered 30 yards, and gave them the 7-0 lead.

Just before the first period was over, Perry Central was able to tie the score. Seth Napier hauled in a short six-yard pass from Austin Pray, and Dylan Wooton tacked on the extra point (7-7).

The Commodores and the Eagles traded touchdowns early in the second period. Madison Southern scored on a 25-yard run, while Perry Central got a 33-yard touchdown pass to Robert McClain. The Commodores missed their conversion, setting the score at 14-13.

Just before the half, Madison Southern was able to get another score on a four-yard run that sent them to the locker room with a 21-13 advantage.

The Eagles continued their onslaught in the third period with another touchdown. This one came after a long drive and ended with an one-yard run. This gave Madison Southern the 28-13 lead.

Perry Central matched the touchdown moments later. This time Nathan Pray hooked up with Austin Pray on a 44-yard pass and run. Devan Brewer caught the conversion, setting the tally at 28-21.

Madison Southern had one more score in them to close out the third period. The Eagles hit on a 20-yard field goal, and took a 31-21 lead into the fourth quarter.

Perry Central began the fourth quarter with a field goal of their own. The Commodores’ Dylan Wooton connected from 28 yards out (24-31).

The Commodores then went for back-to-back touchdowns netting them the 36-31 lead. The first came on a 57-yard touchdown grab by Nathan Pray, and the second a five-yard run by Austin Pray.

However, it would not be enough to secure the win for the Commodores. The Eagles were able to enter the end zone just before time ran out with a 15-yard pass. It would be enough to give them the 37-36 win.
