Kentucky needs to revamp its playoff system for football. The first round games feature teams that should not be anywhere close to a post season game.

For example, Knott County Central came into Belfry with a 2-8 record. The Pirates led 41-0 after only one quarter of play. It was like they were playing against a middle school team.

The Pirates could have easily put 100 points on the scoreboard if Coach Philip Haywood had not started putting in the reserves in the second quarter. He played his junior varsity in the second half.

I honestly believe Belfry’s state championship middle school team could have beaten Knott County Central’s varsity team.

Other first round scores were about the same. Louisville St. Xavier 66, Lexington Tates Creek 13; Meade County 58, Louisville Southern 6; Bowling Green 62, Apollo 6; Johnson Central 68, Harrison County 14; Louisville Central 78, Casey County 20; Danville 67, Betsy Layne 12; Frankfort 78, Ludlow 0 and these are just a few examples of the routs.

There were only two close games that I saw, Lawrence County beat Morgan County 22-14 in a mild upset and Prestonsburg defeated Middlesboro 36-33. Every other game was pretty much a massacre.

Why even let teams into the playoffs that have no chance at winning and are only getting embarrassed. Cut out the first week and go right to the next round. Or change to a point ranking system.

In the 2006 football season, the KHSAA changed the post-season format so that teams stayed within their own districts for the first two rounds of the playoffs. It was supposed to be a way to cut travel expenses and boost gate receipts.

After a couple of years of negative reviews, the KHSAA board decided to go back to the old playoff format. So in 2008 the playoffs matched teams from different districts in the opening round of the playoffs.

But, why not cut out this first round all together. There are teams making it into the playoffs that have no chance to win. They only get embarrassed.

I’m sure money has something to do with it. However, even at the Belfry game, where they get huge crowds and great support, there were some empty seats. And by halftime many of those fans left.

Please do something about this KHSAA. Spare the fans from these mismatches that they witness in the first round of the playoffs every year.

There has to be a better way.
