(MCT) WEST MADISON — Scott coach Shane Griffith feels his team is back to playing as well as it did the first six weeks of the season.

Led by an aggressive defense that was in Wyoming East quarterback Aaron Griffith’s face all night, the Class AA No. 7 Skyhawks dispatched the No. 10 Warriors 46-16 Friday night at Scott High.

Griffith was sacked five times and the Scott defense forced five turnovers. Griffith was intercepted twice.

“Our defense is very aggressive,” Shane Griffith said. “We blitz a lot with our scheme and we try to crowd the box.”

Sophomore Hunter Bradley had two fumble recoveries for the Skyhawks, who held East’s top two rushers, Jacob Summe and Chris Cecil, to 42 and 21 yards, respectively.

“Credit to Scott,” Wyoming East coach Gary Poindexter said. “They have a tremendous defense. They tackle well and they are big and strong up front.”

Leading 25-7 at halftime, Scott got a 1-yard touchdown run from Cameron Loftus and a 12-yarder from Triston Crone to make it 39-7.

Cecil’s 31-yard field goal with 28 seconds to play in the third got East to within 39-10.

East went methodical on its next drive, running 14 plays and 65 yards over 7:54.

The series ended on Griffith’s 22-yard touchdown pass to Ty Treadway.

Scott (8-3) finished its scoring on the next drive with a 38-yard TD run by Loftus with 2:24 to play.

The Skyhawks, who won their first six games before closing the regular season with three losses in their last four, finished with 361 yards of offense.

“Fortunately for us,” Griffith said, “we were able to get our offense clicking again.”

The Warriors finished the year 7-4, a vast improvement from the combined 8-22 over the last three seasons combined.

“It’s just a compliment to our kids,” Poindexter said. “Their dedication and hard work and believing in the program. And senior leadership has been big this year, especially early on when we were struggling.”

East scored on its first drive of the game and used five different ball carriers. Jacob Dulcie had a 41-yard run in the drive to get the Warriors into Scott territory.

Summe eventually carried in from two yards to put East ahead 7-0.

The shutout didn’t last long, and the lead evaporated soon after.

Robert Bias’ 70-yard touchdown run on a direct snap got the Skyhawks on the board, and Cody Brown’s 1-yard sneak capped off the next drive. The point after failed on both, but Scott led 12-7.

Touchdown passes of 29 yards from Brown to Michael Belcher and 37 from Joseph Jude to James Dehart raised the lead to 25-7 at the break.

The Warriors turned the ball over four times in the first half.

Scott (8-3) will travel to No. 2 Keyser in the second round. Keyser advanced by waxing Mingo Central 61-14 Friday night. Griffith said the game will be played at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
