WEIRTON – Tug Valley’s football season ended in the first round of the Class A playoffs with a 58-12 loss to Madonna in Weirton on Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers went into the game ranked No. 13, taking on the Blue Dons who were ranked No. 4. Tug Valley had to make the long road trip to the northern panhandle for the game.

Tug Valley played the home team tough in the early minutes. The score was only 10-6 after the first quarter.

Madonna took an early 2-0 lead with a team safety. They extended the lead when Nick Ossman hit pay-dirt on a 7-yard run. Ross Comis ran in for the 2-point conversion with 5:31 left in the opening quarter to give the Blue Dons a 10-0 lead.

Tug Valley got on the board with 1:03 remaining in the quarter as senior quarterback Mikey Newsome connected with senior tight end Corey Dillon for a 20-yard TD pass. The conversion pass failed, but the game was close at that point and heading into the second quarter.

Madonna flexed its muscles in the second quarter and started off quickly. With 11:48 left in the half, Comis hit Marcello Biondillo on a 60-yard TD pass. Matthew Green kicked the extra point to make it 17-6.

The Blue Dons scored a couple of minutes later after Tug Valley was unable to move the football. Madonna’s Eliott Nero scored at the 9:54 mark on a 4-yard run. Green’s kick made it 24-6.

With 5:54 remaining in the half, Comis kept the football and ran it in from four yards out. Green’s kick made it 31-6.

The Blue Dons were able to get into the end zone once again with 3:34 left in the quarter as Will Bowser intercepted a pass and ran it back 67 yards for the defensive score interception. Green booted the extra point to make it 38-6 heading into the dressing room at the half.

In the third quarter Madonna scored again at the 10:35 mark as Comis connected with Nero for a 25-yard TD pass. The kick made it 45-6.

In the third quarter Madonna scored again with 2:50 left as their signal caller Comis hooked up with Will Bowser for a 33-yard pass. Green’s kick made it 52-6.

Madonna kept pouring it on and with 10:00 left in the game Ossman scored again on a 1-yard run. The kick was no good, but the home team led 58-6.

With :59 seconds left in the game, Tug Valley backup quarterback Tyler Conley hit Dillon with a 19 yard TD pass. The run failed, but the lead was cut to 58-12.

Tug Valley ended up with 291 yards of total offense, 157 on the ground and 134 through the air. The Panthers had 13 penalties for 73 yards.

Madonna had 353 yards of total offense, with a good balance. The Blue Dons had 173 rushing yards and 180 passing yards. The Blue Dons had six penalties for 60 yards.

Rushing for Tug Valley saw Aaron Muncy with 21 carries for 121 yards, Justin Baisden seven carries for 16 yards and Phillip Lucas seven carries for seven yards. Conley had one carry for six yards, Jesse Mays three carries for six yards and David Runyon one try for one yard.

Dillon had three receptions for 51 yards and a pair of TDs, Muncy three receptions for 49 yards, Baisden two receptions for 21 yards and Lucas one catch for 13 yards.

Newsome was 8-for-18 passing for 115 yards, one touchdown and four interceptions, while Conley was 1-for-3 for 19 yards, one TD and no picks.

On defense senior Isaac Parsley had eight tackles, Conley also had eight tackles, Muncy four and Thomas Baisden four to lead the Panthers.
