TWELVE-POLE - An apparent argument turned deadly at a Twelve Pole (Breeden) residence Sunday evening, as what is believed to be a murder/suicide claimed the lives of two individuals and left two young children without their parents.

According to information provided by West Virginia State Police (WVSP) Public Information Officer, 1st Sgt. Michael Baylous, troopers from the Williamson Detachment, along with 2 Mingo County Sheriff’s (MCSD) deputies, were dispatched to a residence on the East Fork of Twelve Pole after a 911 call was placed stating that shots had been fired.

Upon arrival, Troopers T.G. Kania, D.M. Williamson and J.J. Dean III discovered the bodies of a male and female lying on the ground outside their residence. Attempts to resuscitate were attempted by emergency medical services employees but were unsuccessful.

According to testimony provided by eye witnesses, Teri Ann Browning, 30, and her husband, William Warren Browning, 45, both of the home, had been involved in a domestic altercation prior to the situation escalating into one of violence involving a deadly weapon. William is said to have shot and fatally wounded his wife before turning the 22 caliber handgun on himself, ending his own life. This horrific event played out as the couple’s two young children, ages 6 and 8, were inside the home. Thanks to the quick action and thoughtfulness of family members, neighbors and law enforcement officers, the juveniles were protected from the details of the circumstances that had played out to the highest extent possible.

Mingo County Medical Examiner Mike Casey pronounced the husband and wife dead, and the bodies were then transported to the State Medical Examiner’s office in Charleston for autopsies to determine the exact cause of death. A Child Services case worker with the WV Department of Health and Human Resources removed the children from the home.

Assisting the troopers on the scene were MCSD Deputies E. Williams and M. Mounts, along with first responders from the East Fork of Twelve Pole Fire Department and STAT Ambulance EMT’s.

More information regarding this case will be released as it becomes available.
