Young Rebels heading into season-opener
EASTERN - The Allen Central High School boys’ basketball team will tip off the 2012-13 season next week with a nearly-new cast of players. After finishing the 2011-12 season 15-15, Allen Central lost six seniors to graduation. The Allen Central coaching staff, however, remains upbeat about the upcoming season. Allen Central will tip off the 2012-13 season at home, hosting 58th District/Floyd County Conference Betsy Layne at J.E. Campbell Arena on Friday, Nov. 30.
“Practice is going real well,” Allen Central Coach Brad Short commented. “We will be extremely young this year but our freshman class will be very strong. We have some very good young guys. Our boys play unbelievably hard but we are lacking in upperclassmen talent.”
Many newcomers are set to contribute for the Rebels.
Allen Central lost a host of talented players to graduation, including guard Braxton Tackett and center Micah Harlow. Tackett averaged 20.4 points per game for the Rebels last season. Harlow ranked second in the scoring column behind Tackett, averaging 11.7 points per game for the Allen Central boys’ basketball team in the 2011-12 campaign.
“We only have one player returning from last year’s team that had any playing time,” Short confided. “Most of our kids that would have been seniors this year that were in our middle school program transferred to other schools a few years ago. We lost over 95 percent of our scoring from last year. With that being said, I think that we will still do better than what most people think. I believe that we will win a couple of more games just by our hustle and play. I look for us to be very competitive in the region in the upcoming years.”
Allen Central will entertain familiar foe Betsy Layne in the first of five straight home games. The Rebels will also host Pikeville (Dec. 4), South Floyd (Dec. 7), Piarist School (Dec. 8) and Sheldon Clark (Dec. 11) prior to venturing to Prestonsburg for their first road game in the 2012-13 season.
