GILBERT – Thousands of coal miners are unemployed, and many other families are in need this holiday season. Those living in this region are being asked to show their support for these miners who have always kept the lights on by making contributions of food, household or personal hygiene items.

“My husband and father were laid off from a surface mine. My husband has been blessed with another job, but most have not been so blessed,” said Angie Cline, who is organizing the event, “I have so many friends and family who have been laid off. This is a serious issue in our community and our state. I thought this would be something I could do to help.”

Items to donate include non-perishable foods and household items, such as soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste, etc. Toys for children are also welcome.

“Things like paper towels, cleaning products and diapers cost a lot,” said Cline, “Getting those things would help the families a lot.”

The Larry Joe Harless Community Center at Gilbert. will be accepting donations on December 7, 8 and 9, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Donations of money will also be accepted at the center, or make checks payable to Coal Miners Christmas Drive, 5405 Browning Fork Rd., Gilbert, WV 25621.

Santa will be on hand Friday and Saturday from 1-7 p.m. to visit with children and listen to their Christmas wishes.

For information, to volunteer or donate, contact Angie Cline at 304-664-9382 (please leave a message if no answer).
