The holiday season normally brings out volunteers, but one Perry County woman who volunteers year round also spent her 80th birthday on Monday helping raise money for needy families.

Glynna Ritchie, who for 30 years served as a postmaster in Perry County, said she always celebrates her birthday with family each Thanksgiving. So when the milestone of her 80th birthday rolled around this year, four days after the holiday, she spent her time volunteering.

“It’s just another day,” she said Monday at the entrance of the Hazard Walmart, where she was ringing the bell for the Salvation Army. She added that she planned to spend the afternoon volunteering at the Hazard ARH.

Ritchie is also active with the local senior center, and said volunteering is a way to keep her muscles working and her mind alert. But there’s also a bigger cause than that, namely her community. The Salvation Army, for instance, helps several local families, especially during the holidays.

“It’s just a way to give back,” she said.

There is no shortage of ways to give back by volunteering, and Ritchie said there is always a need for volunteers at the veterans center, nursing home, and the local senior center.
