Webster’s dictionary describes a church as being “a place of Christianly worship,” and people go to church for a myriad of reasons. Some go to worship the Lord through song and through prayer, to seek His guidance through scripture and to learn more about the stories in the Bible and how they relate to their daily lives. Still others go to fellowship with other members of the congregation, to lift others up in prayer and to socialize.

My husband went to Jack’s Creek Baptist Church for all of these reasons, until the use of racial slurs and the mishandling of other situations made it impossible for him to attend.

My husband does not lie, nor does he acquire selective amnesia when asked about what was said or what took place. And I am extremely proud of my husband for standing up for what is right! He, like the other church members named in that article, are loving, God fearing, honorable and honest people, who did not undertake this matter brashly. They tried to go about things in the correct way, to no avail, before making this situation public, and they have no reason to apologize to anyone for their actions!

Christians are directed not to judge others, but to discern what is right and what is wrong, as well as to whom they should listen. God’s judgment begins at the pulpit. There should be no place in a true man of God or in the Lords’ house for greed, racial bias, or the thirst for power. Nor should there be judging of other religions.

A true man of God is not manipulative, and does not run a church as a dictatorship. His life should be an open book, and he should have no reason to tell the congregation that they are not to investigate his past. Nor does he seek to do things illegally as long as it benefits him!

I would like to thank Jack Latta and The Floyd County Times for publishing the article. I sincerely hope and pray that bringing this situation to light does not tear apart Jack’s Creek Baptist Church, but that perhaps other members will have their eyes opened and will take steps to remedy the wrongs and once again seek to be a church that is a true family united in Christ’s love, a blessing to the community and favorable in the eyes of God!
