Roberts lead Bears over Alice Lloyd

PIPPA PASSES – Four players reached double figures in the scoring column and the defense forced 21 turnovers as the University of Pikeville knocked off Alice Lloyd College 71-64 Tuesday night at the Grady Nutt Athletics Center.
Pikeville (2-4) won for the second straight game thanks to its defensive heat, which was led by senior Sally Roberts. The Pikeville guard had nine steals to go with her team-high 16 points.
The teams were tied four times early, including at 11 for the final time before the Bears ran off eight straight points in 1:24. All eight points were scored by Roberts, who had a layup with 13:14 to play to make it 19-11.
The Bears led by 16 twice in the first half, including at the end when the score was 41-25.
Pikeville managed only one point in the first five minutes of the second half as the Lady Eagles clawed back into the game. When sophomore Carla Booth scored on a lay-in with 15:48 to play, the lead was down to six at 42-36.
The lead stayed between five and 13 the rest of the way until Courtney Crowder scored with 1:16 to play to make it 64-60. But from there the Bears were 5-of-6 from the line to pull away for the seven-point win.
Roberts was joined in double figures by junior Callisha Johnson, who had 15 points and four steals. Junior Brogan Conley and freshman Peyton Wright tossed in 10 points.
Conley led the team with eight rebounds as the teams broke even with 40 rebounds each.
Alice Lloyd (6-4) was led by Booth’s 15 points. Ariel Nickell and J.J. Hickson added 14 points apiece. Nickell added 10 rebounds for ALC, which was led on the glass by Carla McDaniel’s 11.
Pikeville will return to Mid-South Conference play on Thursday night when it hosts preseason No. 2 Shawnee State University at the East Kentucky Expo Center.
