George C. Williamson, 74, of Williamson, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, November 28, 2012, at the Appalachian Regional Hospital in South Williamson, Ky.


A lifelong resident of Williamson, George was born March 14, 1938, the son of the late Dixie Williamson Hatfield.


George’s wife, Virginia Rogers Williamson, preceded him in death on June 3, 2012. A beloved son, Robert Williamson; his aunts, Alice Smith and Nancy Kessinger; and a cousin, Doug Kessinger, also preceded him in death.


George retired after more than 30 years of service with the Norfolk Southern Railroad. He was an engineer at the time of his retirement. He had also served for a number of years as the West Virginia Legislative Director of the United Transportation Union.


George had owned and operated several businesses in addition to working on the railroad. His bakery, George and Sons, was a very successful operation for many years. He operated a Radio Shack store in downtown Williamson. He was involved in construction and he had delivered the Williamson Daily News in the Gilbert area for nearly two decades.


George really enjoyed helping people. He will be most especially remembered for the hundreds of free sandwiches he and his sons delivered to people throughout the area following the devastation of the 1977 flood of Williamson and the Tug Valley region.


George ran the time clock for Wolfpack ball games for many years.


He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Williamson.


George is survived by three children, Dennis (Debbie) Williamson, of Bluefield, Robin (Michael) Griffey of Williamson and Shawn (Debra) Williamson of Williamson; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a cousin, Ethel Ferguson of Charleston; his beloved dog, Roxie; and several extended family members.


George is also survived by several good friends.


The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, November 30, at Weaver Mortuary in West Williamson.


George will be laid to rest beside his beloved Virginia, at a graveside services to be conducted at 1 p.m., on Saturday, December 1, at the Mountain View Memory Gardens at Huddy, Ky. The Rev. Jarrod Belcher will officiate. Pallbearers include Dennis Williamson, Shawn Williamson, Lee Williamson, Daniel Williamson, Michael Griffey, Richard Dobbins, Joey Jackson and Steven Smith.
