Local high school basketball will get into full swing tonight as Mingo Central will host a boys-girls doubleheader at home.

The Lady Miners of coach Don Taylor, 0-1, will play host to Sissonville starting at 5:30 p.m. Mingo Central was led in their first game by Ashley with 12 points, while Miranda Evans added 11 and Danielle Browning chipped in eight. Chrissy Farmer is the point guard. Several other players are in the game rotation.

Then Brad Napier will hit the sideline for his first game as the new head coach of the boys’ team. That game is scheduled to start at around 7:30 p.m.

The Miners will be led by senior point guard Austin Banks. Banks was a first team Williamson Daily News All-Area pick last season. Others that should see action for coach Napier include Alex “Booger” Lee, Marquis Cunningham, Jason West, Matt Lester, Julius Hatcher and Garth Simpkins.

Another game tonight will see coach Bobby Varney’s Phelps Hornets will at Hurley, Virginia. The Phelps girls team of coach J. R. VanHoose also take on the Rebels tonight in this doubleheader.

On Thursday, Dec. 6, the Hornets will travel to Letcher County Central.

The Belfry Pirates were scheduled to open their season at Prestonsburg on Thursday. This would have been part of a boy-girl doubleheader. The game has been postponed because of a conflict Prestonsburg has at their gymnasium.

Coach Randy Casey is trying to schedule another team to play either at Belfry or on the road. Casey’s squad is getting a slow start as usual due to the success of the football team. .Coach Kevin Deskins Lady Pirate squad lost their opener to Knott County Central 59-24 in a game played at Leslie County.

Casey has several returning players including 6-foot-5 senior Tony Messer, a first team All-Area selection last season. Josh Robinson, Sean Hurley, Trinity Carr, Cameron Johnson, Brett Charles and others also return.

Sheldon Clark will be at East Ridge on Thursday.

On Friday, Dec. 7, Phelps visits Rose Hill Christian.

Mingo Central hit the road as they travel up U.S. 52 to take on Tolsia on Saturday, Dec. 8, while Greenup County will be in Inez, Ky. to take on the Sheldon Clark Cardinals.

Lincoln County will be at Mingo Central Thursday night for a girl’s contest.

The Tug Valley Lady Panthers will travel to River View on Friday night, while Phelps is at Rose Hill Christian.

The Phelps Hornets will head over to Shelby Valley on Friday night.
