With a little ingenuity, a willingness to do a little work, a fair amount of generosity and the power of social media, a group of local residents is making a big difference in the lives of nursing home residents, one tiny gift at a time.

The “Facebook Angels” program began as an off-the-cuff attempt to provide Christmas presents for residents of one nursing home, then expanded to include both nursing homes in Floyd County. This year, the group is also seeking to provide presents for those staying at Mountain Comprehensive Care Center’s adult and child crisis centers, as well.

This isn’t the work of a big, national charity, or really any organized charity at all. It’s simply the goodwill of local residents who have chosen to use their Facebook accounts to spread a little holiday cheer. They see a need, and they choose to fill it.

As organizer Brent Graden notes, “We’re getting it done.” And they certainly are.

So, we would like to offer a tip of the hat to Graden and all those who assist in the effort, either by purchasing gifts or by helping to deliver them. They are certainly showing true Christmas spirit with their endeavor.

Anyone who would like to assist with “Facebook Angels” can contact Graden through his Facebook page, at http://www.facebook.com/votebrentgraden, or by calling him at (606) 226-9353.
