MAN — The Man High School girls’ basketball team picked up its first win of the season with Tuesday night’s 43-32 victory at home over the Class AAA Ripley Vikings at the Man Memorial Fieldhouse.

Man evened its record at 1-1 on the young season. The Lady Billies had lost at home to Logan in the season opener last week.

Tuesday night’s contest was marred by fouls as a total of 62 free throws were shot by both teams combined.

Ripley was a woeful 9-for-34 — just 26.4 percent — from the foul line. Man was better at 50 percent as the Lady Billies sank 14-of-28.

Class A Man led only 5-4 after one quarter and 12-9 at the half as both teams struggled.

Coach Tonia Ward’s Lady Billies then poured it on in the third quarter, outscoring Ripley 14-6 to take a 26-15 advantage. Man then played the Vikings to a 17-17 draw in the fourth quarter to set the final score.

Three Man players reached double figures in scoring, led by Morgan Conn, who had 14 points on the night. Summer Sword tossed in 13 points, while Mika McCoy had 12.

Taylor Whited and Jennifer Shull chipped in with two points each for the Lady Billies.

Kelli Poling paced the Vikings with 10 points.

Man is scheduled to return to action next Tuesday night at home against Cross Lanes Christian. Game time is set for 7 p.m. It will be the third straight home game to open the season for the Lady Billies.

Man then travels to Greater Beckley Christian on Dec. 13 in its first road game of the season. Man then plays at Class AA defending state champion Westside on Dec. 17 before hosting Wahama on Dec. 18 in the final game before Christmas break.
