MAN — The weather was beautiful outside as START members and guests assembled in the fellowship hall at Bruce McDonald United Methodist Church on Thursday, November 15, 2012 to celebrate Thanksgiving.

START decorators did a beautiful job in decorating the fellowship hall. Tables were covered with white table linens, gold placemats and gold napkins and the centerpiece for each table included a fall flower arrangement in a small silver container. Candles were on each side of the flower arrangement. These pieces were surrounded by a long garland of autumn leaves. The food tables were arranged in a square with a beautiful tablescape in the center allowing room for the many food items. Two colorful paper turkeys sat on the piano.

Of course, the meal consisted of turkey and dressing, ham and all the accompanying side dishes. The dessert tables were laden with a wide assortment of homemade goodies. START’s confectioner, Zettie Brown, prepared a cake with a seasonal decoration — white icing, pumpkin colored trimming with small pumpkins made of icing.

The meeting opened with prayer offered by Rev. Stephen Board from Beckley. START president Frank Thompson introduced guests Rev. Mike Pollard, Rev. Shaun Walker, Rev. Board, Robert and Dixie Frazier, Dock Allen, Tom and Irene Runyon from New Jersey, Anna Casio Tyler Casio, Opal Bailey, Tammy McCallister, Rosella Bailey, and Cecilia Dingess.

After a delicious Thanksgiving dinner, the November birthday celebrants were recognized. Members celebrating were Arthur Brunty, Barbara Brunty, Gretchen Donahue, Patricia Doczi, Betty Gentry, JoAnne Hensley, Toni Perdue and Elizabeth Tackett. While START’s photographer Shirley Brown took a picture of the celebrants, the audience sang the “Happy Birthday” song.

Rev. Pollard gave a brief talk concerning the current status of the new Route 10 road to Rum Junction. The bridge crossing the river on the other side of Rita Mall is basically completed.

After his talk, he offered a special prayer for Alice Harrison, Geraldine Bunch, Garnett Triplett, Nancy Garrett, Homer Williamson and Bernie Queen. Bernie who was a faithful member of START died at his home on Saturday, November 24.

During a brief business session, it was decided to have the December meeting on Thursday, December 13. Since START had a real Thanksgiving feast, it was decided that we would only have finger foods and desserts for the December meeting. In lieu of a gift exchange, it was decided that each member would bring two or more cans of food which will be donated to the local food pantry. Gretchen Donahue and Donna Thibault agreed to canvas the local merchants for gifts to use as door prizes for the December meeting.

Afterwards, Donahue directed the playing of several games of bingo. Donated prizes were awarded to the winners.

The 62 members and guests signing the attendance register were Rev. Stephen Board, Gretchen Donahue, Elizabeth Tackett, Lenora Moss, Rev. Mike Pollard, Helen Nelson, William Coyer, Laura Hinchman, Cecilia Dingess, Shirley and Zettie Brown, Dr. Pat White, Rev.
