PRESTONSBURG — Representatives from around the region and members of the Big Sandy Area Development District met last Friday to review projects and discuss the future of the region.

The breakfast meeting was attended by House Speaker Greg Stumbo, Sen. Johnny Ray Turner, Rep. Leslie Combs, Rep. Hubert Collins, Judge Executives R.D. “Doc” Marshal and Charles Hardin, and Mayors Jerry Fannin, Bob Porter, C. LaVerne Dye, and Jerry Fultz.

Sandy Runyon, with Big Sandy ADD, was present to give those in attendance an overview of where different projects stand within the community. Runyon noted in particular a new case management program which was funded through grants after last spring’s tornadoes, to help victims cope with their losses. The grant was funded by the ADD’s committee on aging.

According to Runyon, the program covered three counties in the Big Sandy region, as well as Morgan and Menifee counties. She says the program has been so successful that they have found two participants to fill the positions of case manger going forward.

Runyon says that the project has now put the processes in place to help when and if another disaster strikes. “It’s a good project and we think you’ll hear more about it.”

Other projects that were discussed during the meeting included the St. Vincent Mission, the Dewey Trail, the Stonecrest Industrial Site, Martin Redevelopment, the Harold Sewer Project, Wheelwright Water Treatment and Water Source, and the Rails to Trails program.

Regina McClure, project developer with the BSADD, also updated attendee’s on the current status of the Big Sandy Water Trail project. McClure says that the project is now looking at podcasts and smart phone apps so that visitors can learn about the history of the river while floating on it. She says the long term goal is to have the water trail travel from Elkhorn City to Louisa.

Also during Friday’s meeting, Bertha Daniels, with the American Association of Retired Persons, presented certificates of recognition to the lawmakers in attendance for their continued support of and assistance to the elderly.
