PIKEVILLE – The week off didn’t hurt the University of Pikeville in the NAIA Div. I Men’s Basketball Coaches Top 25 Poll this week, as it remained No. 4 in the country.

The Bears are now alone in that spot, as Rogers State (Okla.) suffered a loss last week and fell to ninth in the country.

The return of eligibility of every team in the Golden State Athletics Conference also did no harm to the Bears, as that league’s top rated team – Westmont (Calif.) – came in just behind them at No. 5. Due to a reporting glitch before last week’s rating, none of the teams in the GSAC – including preseason No. 1 Concordia (Calif.) – were eligible for last Tuesday’s rating.

The top three in the country remained the same, with Oklahoma Baptist, Cumberlands and Lee (Tenn.) in the win, place and show spots. OBU picked up eight first-place votes, while Cumberlands landed the other three.

Following Pikeville and Westmont in the Top 10 are Columbia (Mo.), Westminster (Utah) and Lindsey Wilson, who all held their position. Rogers State is followed by William Carey (Miss.), rounding out the Top 10.

The Top 10 teams have a combined worksheet of 100 wins and eight losses.

With three teams in the Top 10, the lone remaining ranked team in the Mid-South Conference is Campbellsville, whose loss to Martin Methodist College on Friday night cost it two places to land at No. 20.

Only the MSC and the Sooner Athletics Conference have as many as four teams in the Top 25.

Georgetown College, after being ranked for 78 consecutive polls, is spending its second straight week in the receiving votes column and is 29th overall.

One other Kentucky school is getting votes this week. Mayfield-based Mid-Continent picked up five votes.

Pikeville will put its 11-1 record on the line Saturday morning when it hosts Life (Ga.) University. The game, a rematch of the Bears 102-100 overtime in in Marietta in November, will be played at the East Kentucky Expo Center at 11 a.m.

The next national ranking will be released on Jan. 8, when the polls become weekly through the end of the regular season.
