LOGAN — When Logan Police Department Officers M.E. Dickerson and J.R. Adkins responded to a call from Walmart about an accused of shoplifter, they became part of a mini-series of drama starring Heather Lee Johnson, 37, of Lyburn.

The events described below are taken directly from the criminal complaint filed in Logan County Magistrate Court.

As the officers arrived on the scene, they conducted a search for the fleeing suspect. Officer Adkins spotted the woman, who ran from him. Adkins found her hiding in the dumpster at Bob Evans. The officer saw a cut straw fall from the bra of the accused as he was trying to get her out of the dumpster.

Ms. Johnson was escorted back to Walmart offices, stopping several times along the way despite officer efforts to keep her moving. Johnson then began acting as if she were having a seizure, continuing to scream and curse at the officers that she was having a “heart attack.” She demanded to be taken to the hospital. Officers repeatedly asked her to stand up and walk to the cruiser, but she refused. Officers had to physically escort Johnson to the LPD cruiser for transport to LPD.

When the officers got to the LPD, an ambulance was there, waiting to transport Ms. Johnson to the Logan Regional Medical Center, where she refused treatment. At that point the officers transported her back to the LPD for processing.

Johnson was accused of entering the store, proceeding to various locations to place a 32 inch Vizio LCD television and three 24-packs of soda into a cart and a pair of house slippers and a pair of jeans into her purse, then leave the store without purchasing the items. When she was approached by Walmart Loss Prevention Officer Mitchell, she fled. The total cost for the merchandise involved was $374.09.

Johnson faces charges of shoplifting third, two counts of obstructing, fleeing on foot and possession of a controlled substance less than 15 grams. She was released under $5000 bond.
