CMS hoop teams sweep past Duval
CHAPMANVILLE — The Chapmanville Middle School girls’ basketball season finished off the 2012 portion of the roundball season with a 37-18 win at home over Duval on Monday night at the CMS gym.
The Lady Tigers remained perfect, running their record to 7-0 on the season.
Last Friday, the CMS girls traveled to Man and defeated the Lady Pioneers easily, 36-4.
Abigail Marcum led the way for Chapmanville in the Man game with 15 points. She was followed by Hollie Carter with 11 and Lexi Martin and Alyson Bragg with six each.
Madison Paynter had two points and Hunter Harvey and Courtney Hinkle had a point each for Man.
“This was a much tougher game than the score indicated,” CMS coach Tommy Kirk said. “Man played extremely hard and made us work for every thing we got. This was by far our best defensive effort this year. On Monday, we played very sluggishly in beating Duval Middle. We have so many kids fighting this flu bug. We didn’t play with a lot of energy.”
Carter paced the Lady Tigers with 11 points in the Duval game. Martin tossed in 10, while Abigail Marcum had eight and Taylor Manns four. Kaylee Blair and Nadia Perry chipped in with two apiece.
“Duval has a big squad and we just never had the energy to get out and go. We played a lot of kids tonight trying to maintain our strength. We have a break now for the holidays and maybe we can get healthy,” Coach Kirk said.
The Chapmanville Middle School JV team beat Man 27-22. Blair and Chloe Sweeney led CMS with six points each. Tabitha Adkins had five, Beth Ball four, while Reese Ellis and Shea Pridemore had two each. Haven Adkins and Madison Webb had one point each.
Madison Meade led Man with eight points.
Last Saturday, the Lady Tigers’ JV tasted defeat for the first time at the hands of the Lenore JV team, 34-28.
Blair had 12 to lead CMS. Sweeney added four, Webb three, while Brooklyn Evans, Jacy Baxter, Adkins and Shea Pridemore had two each. Reese Ellis had one point.
The CMS JV girls got back on track Monday defeating Duval 36-16. Ellis had eight and Ball six to lead the Lady Tigers. Cheyenne Armstrong and Blair netted four each, while Tabitha Adkins and Kelsey Shadd had three apiece. Haven Adkins, Evans, Pridemore and Webb all had two points each. CMS has a 6-1 record.
Chapmanville’s JV’s are scheduled to play in its own holiday tourney this Thursday through Saturday. Eight girls’ teams and eight boys’ teams are slated to play 22 total games in three days.
CHAPMANVILLE — The Chapmanville Middle School boys’ basketball team picked up its fourth straight win with Monday night’s 46-25 drubbing of visiting Duval.
CMS led 16-3 after one quarter, using a smothering defense which forced Duval into repeated turnovers. The Tigers led 30-13 after three.
“I tell our team all the time all I ask is for hustle,” first-year CMS boys’ coach Jody Harless said. “We got Dylan back tonight. He really helps us on the defensive end. I thought he was all over the floor tonight. Our rebounding is improving. Hunter Workman, Jeremy Lilly and Tyler Moore are getting better and that’s all I can ask.”
Chris Bailey led the Tigers with 13 points. Dylan Smith and Devin Collins both had eight.
The Tigers were scheduled to play Logan on Wednesday.
